Mooak Festival in the spring and the annual Yonsei-Korea Games in the fall semesters are the official festivals for undergraduates at the university-wide level. In the former, around the second week of May, seminars, film festivals, exhibitions, concerts, performances and sports competitions turn the campus into one huge venue for symposium both in the original sense (i.e. ¡°drinking party¡±) and in the general academic sense. On the latter occasion, the so-called ¡°Yongojeon¡± is a venerable tradition going back to 1929; sports teams from Yonsei University meet those from Korea University to try out their skills in the city's stadiums, with the students, clad in the colors of their university (azure for Yonsei, crimson for Korea), vehemently cheering their team. The games themselves have the additional advantage of bringing together the new in-coming students at the annual ¡°Akaraka Festival,¡± where they make a huge ¡°rehearsal¡± party at the Amphitheater out of the cheering songs and dances.
Apart from the major university-level festivals, each college and student club hosts a variety of events: rock concerts, film festivals, exhibitions and sports competitions, as well as academic seminars. For example, there is the ¡°Banquet in the Woods¡± hosted by the campus broadcasting club among the lush pine woods of Chongsongdae each May.
True to its reputation as a genuinely globalized university, Yonsei students meet and mix with international students through such channels as the Mentors Club, which links Korean students with international students on a one-to-one basis, and the International Yonsei Club, which arranges various activities and events to promote interaction between the Korean Yonseians and the ever-growing number of international Yonseians. The launching of the all-English Underwood International College in 2006 has also initiated a new tradition of globalized student culture at Yonsei, as the highly competitive Underwood students manage to take time off from their demanding workload to exhibit their talents and interests through various events. |
