Biotechnology involves the most modern forms of biological, biomedical, and biochemical engineering. Research focuses on the role of genes in the cellular, biochemical and molecular basis of life as well as on the development of new biomaterials and biochemical processes for application. Therefore, biotechnology differs from biology, biochemistry, and other basic life sciences by its emphasis on using the knowledge of bioscience to solve important practical problems.
Research in our department includes various technologies such as manipulation of microorganisms and eukaryotic cells at the cellular and molecular levels to provide useful products or services, and to develop new processes. The broad umbrella of our department also encompasses fundamental and applied researches on bioprocess engineering (upstream and downstream processes), nano-biotechnology, rational drug design, bioinformatics, information technology, medicinal chemistry, as well as the development of novel biomaterials and new functional foods.
Rapid increase in the applications of biotechnology requires students to understand new concepts and information in bioscience. Our department program will provide students with a firm ground in biotechnology and an introduction to general life science and biochemical engineering. In addition, our department will prepare students to be productive and innovative research scientists and organizational members with an understanding of the fundamental context of their research and how it relates to applications, so that eventually they can take leadership in their academic and industrial fields. The newly renovated program emphasizes molecular biotechnology and is well designed for students who want to pursue a research career in molecular biotechnology at the bachelors level. This concentration will prepare students for occupations in basic and applied biotechnology research.
With a solid background in the fundamentals of biotechnology, and effective communication and teamwork skills, our students have proven to be well prepared for professions covering the full range of the biotechnology industry. Our graduates pursue successful careers in basic and applied researches, regulatory affairs, patent law, technology transfer, marketing, management, intellectual property, and business consulting. The success of our alumni speaks for itself.
