Library and Information Science has based its academic foundation on collecting, storing, and retrieving information that is needed for intellectual activities and knowledge communication. Library and Information Science also studies information communication and the properties of information, including the factors that control its flow. It develops scientific methods to achieve effective and efficient access and use of needed information. Due to the development of information technology, as seen in computers, communication technology and new media, continuous progress has been made in the skills required for the collection, organization, accumulation, retrieval, utilization, and dissemination of information.
Generally there are four ways to advance the careers of graduates who major in Library and Information Science. The first way is by becoming a professional librarian in any kind of library or information center. A second way is by becoming an information specialist in mass media, business enterprises, and research institutes. A third way is by seeking employment in the information industries where one can design and analyze information systems, database systems, and information network systems, or can develop software for such systems. The last is by entering graduate school and becoming a researcher or a scholar in the discipline of information science by earning a Master's degree or Ph.D. Every year, more than 90% of the graduates of Library and Information Science get a job and work actively as leaders in the areas that are mentioned above.
