Introduction

The purpose of the study of Chinese language and literature is to become a competent person who is well-grounded in the language and literature of China, not only by acquiring a wide-ranging knowledge about Chinese history, philosophy, politics, economy, etc., which resides in the heart of Chinese literature, but also by conducting a historical study of Chinese literary movements, writers, and works ranging from ancient times to the present. In addition, we will be pursuing an intensive study of the structure of the language through the analysis of the phoneme, letter, and usage of Chinese.

As for the path after graduation, most graduates with a degree in Chinese and Chinese literature are employed at companies, especially large companies including financial companies, and work at cultural fields, fully taking advantage of their major. Assuredly, growing relations with the People's Republic of China will enable our graduates to have even greater job opportunities.

Finally, in the pursuit of more positive interactions with other related majors, study of Chinese and Chinese literature should be built up as the core of Oriental studies. This will make it possible to realize anew that at the center of Oriental research is China, and that Asian studies is not possessed solely by China but also by the whole Orient.
