The English major consists of two major parts: Literature and Language. The English major enables students to study British and American language and culture. Study and research in this major naturally calls for specialized capacities of the English language. The Literature part includes four significant genres of literature: poetry, novel, drama, and criticism. Through subject courses and research, students have an opportunity to study the history of British literature, the history of American literature, and comparative British and American literary criticism. Students are exposed to literary works from Beowulf to Shakespearean drama, to the novels of Dickens, and to American imagist poetry. The Language part is composed of three sections: practical English, linguistics and TESOL. Through practical English courses, students are expected to enhance their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Linguistics helps students enhance their knowledge of English syntax, semantics, phonetics, and phonology. TESOL courses focus on how to teach, how to organize curriculum, and how to develop materials. |
