The College of Social Sciences has its origins in the former College of Political Science and Law which included the Department of Political Science founded in August, 1946, the Department of Law established in April, 1954, the Department of Public Administration opened in 1958, and the Department of Mass Communication opened in 1972.

When the Department of Law became the College of Law, the other departments, the Departments of Political Science and Diplomacy, Public Administration, and Mass Communication, formed the College of Social Sciences in 1981. The Department of Social Welfare joined the College in 1995. The Department of Sociology joined in 2004.

The purpose of the Department of Political Science & International Studies is to provide theoretical and practical education for political science students. Special emphasis is on educating and training its majors who intend to participate in the decision-making process in various fields of Korean society by enhancing understanding of changing situations and political issues in contemporary Korean and world politics.

The Department of Public Administration develops theories and practices of public administration through scientific methods and trains future administrators to cope with increasing administrative demands effectively.

The Department of Mass Communication was established to provide students with education in human communication as well as mass communication. The curriculum offers courses on broad theories of communication, research methods, and hands on experiences in newspaper publishing, TV production, and advertising. The Department has been quite successful in preparing students to become competent professionals in various communication-related organizations as well as major mass media organizations.

The Department of Social Welfare was originally founded in the College of Theology in 1981 to meet the growing needs of the nation for social welfare services and to contribute to its social development. It emphasizes not only the provision of scholarship and professional knowledge but also the cultivation of a sense of calling and a service-oriented mind, parallel to the Christian Spirit. Mutual cooperation between the fields of Social Welfare and other fields of Social Sciences is necessary and valuable in the experimental efforts of the College to develop interdisciplinary scholastic activities and to maintain a meaningful relationship between theory and practice. The goal of the Department of Sociology is to provide students with theories and methodologies to think critically, to express ideas creatively, and to learn collectively as a group. Originally established in 1972 as a discipline in the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of Sociology has moved to the College of Social Science in 2004 to seek the balance between theoretical knowledge and its practical application to society. Our students graduate with not just a body of knowledge and skills, comparative and international perspectives required for Global citizens in the 21st century, but also the “sociological imagination” that will enable them to make a critical, creative, and collaborative difference in the workplace, society and the world.

The College of Social Sciences is located in Yeonhui Hall, a beautiful five story stone building where more than 1,500 students of the five departments study under the supervision of sixty faculty members.
