The training of teachers through teacher preparation courses has long been a part of the university curriculum. In 1981 the College of Education was formally established. It was renamed the College of Sciences in Education in 1983 to more accurately reflect its goals of research as well as training. Undergirded by the Christian aspirations for truth and freedom and the national education ideals, the college seeks to meet the educational needs of modern times and the challenge of integrating formal and non-formal education. The college provides a balanced program for those persons interested in all aspects of education, from pre-school to the adult years, and prepares students to be teachers, school administrators, and education specialists in the corporate field. The college provides a bachelor's degree program for the students of education, physical education, and sports and leisure studies. It also provides the pre-service teacher preparation programs in twenty-five subject areas for all university students planning to become teachers at secondary schools.
